Autumn

The mood is light, poised and stimulative and nights fall earlier in the evening. Mdina silhouetted at sunset is an incredible sensation, and as evening approaches the silent city is gently bathed in soft, warm-hued light accentuating the soft symmetry of the charismatic gem.

Autumn at sea is a truly blissful experience; the smell, taste and feeling of a fresh and salty sea breeze makes you feel alive. The sun is warm, not hot, and one can take pleasure in sailing in the sun. Touring the capital, Valletta, is much easier in autumn due to the cooler weather.

Autumn is a time of rebirth, when the flora is seen taking on new life, exhibiting its true colours and vibrancy. The air is no longer oppressive but lenient and inspirational. A fresh breeze is always present - a spark for one’s ‘joie de vivre’.

Autumn encourages people to get out there and get moving whether at the gym, tennis court or promenade. There are many exciting walks with beautiful scenery around Malta. Many of the more spectacular can be found off the beaten track such as Bingemma (limits of Mgarr), where a little chapel lies just on top of the cliffs. There is also a stone bridge which takes you across the valley on the Victoria Lines. Another fantastic autumn trek is in Lunzjata (limits of Rabat, Gozo). The countryside here is breathtaking and since very few people set out on this walk, these country lanes are very quiet, especially during the week.

For those keen on calm evenings out, autumn marks the start of the theatre season. (For more information on what is showing in autumn see list pg.) Dining in the evening now takes place indoors, in a formal atmosphere, as opposed to the more casual summer nights outdoors; however most restaurants will still offer outdoor seating if the weather permits.

Maltese autumns offer the all-round Mediterranean experience with a cool and ambient vibe, making it easier to go out and explore or unwind - all depending on your mood.
