Mahzen XII – Artisans Centre

Take a break from the hot summer temperatures within the tranquil and cool surroundings of the 800-year-old Mdina bastions. With 18-foot thick walls and high ceilings, The Magazine (Mahzen XII) was built to safeguard the Maltese from the Ottoman corsairs – and hot summers.
We specialise in local delicacies served with freshly-baked Maltese ftira (traditional bread), organic oil and balsamic vinegar – for less than €10. All local produce is handpacked and sold for under €5, a unique opportunity to take the flavours of Malta back home. We also offer a wide selection of wines grown, produced and aged entirely in Malta and Gozo.
While enjoying local delicacies along with a glass of local Merlot/Chardonnay, guests can go through our unique Melitensia library. Feel free to ask for advice on where to visit and discover well-kept Maltese secrets.
Il-Mahzen serves as an art gallery, promoting young talent; art pieces on display include paintings, pottery, sculptures, silver and original prints, all selling at very competitive prices.
Il-Mahzen XII also caters for group functions for all ages and languages. We are renowned for our Fiestas; all group functions are tailormade with one special ingredient the Maltese are famous for – hospitality. Packages reflect guests’ requirements and may include traditional finger food; a range of local wine-tasting; story-telling – such as the 1664 Mdina murder legend – and treasure hunts such as historic Mdina by night.
